Local government should feel local.

Local government should feel local. That sounds obvious, but I think it’s worth saying. When I talk to people around Laurentian Valley, most aren’t asking municipal government to reinvent the wheel.

Local government should feel local.

That sounds obvious, but I think it’s worth saying.

When I talk to people around Laurentian Valley, most aren’t asking municipal government to reinvent the wheel.

They want the wheel to hit fewer potholes.

They want the ditch to drain properly. They want the road plowed when the snow comes down. They want emergency services there when they need them. They want somewhere for their kids and grandkids to play. They want sensible growth, good local jobs and businesses, and they want to know that when their tax dollars are spent, somebody actually asked whether we’re getting good value for them.

That’s the kind of municipal government I believe in.

Practical. Local. Accountable.

I’m not running because I think Laurentian Valley is broken.

I’m running because I think a good community stays good by paying attention to the little things before they become expensive things.

A culvert maintained today is better than a washed-out road tomorrow.

Planning for growth before approving it is better than figuring out the infrastructure afterwards.

Maintaining equipment is generally cheaper than replacing it during an emergency.

And sometimes the smartest solution isn’t for Laurentian Valley to do everything by itself. If we can work with Pembroke, Petawawa, the County or another neighbouring municipality to provide a service better or more efficiently, I think we should be willing to have that conversation.

But there has to be a reason for it.

Not because “that’s what everyone else is doing.”

Not because there’s a shiny grant attached to it.

And definitely not because it makes for a good ribbon-cutting photo.

The question should always come back to:

Does this make life better for the people who live and work here, and is the cost reasonable?

That applies to roads.

It applies to recreation.

It applies to housing and development.

It applies to shared services.

It applies to major capital projects.

And it applies to every dollar Council asks taxpayers to contribute.

I also think we need to remember what makes Laurentian Valley a little different.

We’re rural roads and subdivisions. Farms and businesses. Families who have been here for generations and people who just moved in. People commuting to Pembroke or Petawawa and people working from their kitchen table with a laptop and a cup of coffee.

One solution isn’t always going to fit every part of the township.

That means listening before deciding.

It means explaining why decisions are being made.

It means being willing to say “I don’t know yet—let’s look at the numbers.”

And occasionally, it means being willing to change your mind when somebody brings better information to the table.

I don't think residents should have to agree with me on everything.

I do think they should always know why I made a decision, what information I used, and whose interests I was trying to protect.

That’s what I mean when I talk about practical leadership.

No grand promises.

No pretending one councillor can snap their fingers and fix everything.

Just doing the homework, asking good questions, working with people, planning ahead and remembering who ultimately pays the bill.

That’s the Laurentian Valley I want to help build:

  1. Growth that still feels like home.
  2. Infrastructure we maintain before it fails.
  3. A municipality that respects what things cost.
  4. Cooperation when cooperation makes sense.
  5. Reliable services people can count on.
  6. And a Council that remembers residents deserve to be heard—not just at election time.

We’ve already got a pretty great place to call home.

My goal is simple:

Take care of what we have, plan properly for what’s coming, and leave Laurentian Valley a little better than we found it.
